I was at a family reunion last weekend and my brother-in-law has an iPhone. The kids were all over it. John didn’t even have to show them how to use it. They were surfing and playing YouTube videos. Each of them would grab it and show the other something. It was quite amazing. Nobody asked to use my mobile PC Samsung Blackjack.

There were some high school girls there as well and I was doing some market research on social networks and text-messaging and such. They were both on Facebook and MySpace and their mom just recently took text-messaging away from them because they were going over their minutes. They said everyone in high school has a Facebook and MySpace account and they all text-message.

Free T-Shirts

Our goal as an exhibitor was to get the 10,000 attendees talking about Squidoo. And my guess is that your goal as a trade show exhibitor is to do the same thing (no, not to talk about Squidoo, to talk about you, of course).
Here’s what we did: we printed 600 t-shirts with a long, hand-written letter on the front, explaining how Squidoo helps eBayers. And we gave the shirt away to anyone willing to wear it. The incentive? Each day, Megan picked someone who was wearing the shirt and gave that person $9,000 worth of ads on Squidoo.

Within an hour, you saw orange t-shirts on the show floor. By the second day, every single t-shirt was taken and more than 5% of all the people there were wearing the shirts.

Total cost: $3,000. (plus the ads).

Are You Investing In Long Term Marketing?

I know that you need the quick fix, you want result now, you need the hot new thing.

Ask yourself this question - how long do you plan to be in business? If it’s more than a year, then I suggest that while you get out there and make the phone ring today, you also need to start planting seeds for your long-term growth by investing in foundational marketing practices that may take time to bare fruit, but ultimately produce the greatest returns.

These seeds are content, connection, and community.

Content is a blog, articles, information products, white papers, how to guides, workshops and podcasts.

Connection is a way for prospects and clients to have a deeper level of experience with your firm. This may come from audio, video, your personal story, or an investment in sales training.

Community can play out by bringing clients together for lunch, making your boardroom available to local non-profit groups, offering active online forums, holding training events, and creating formal referral networks.

Some of the activities above overlap the 3Cs and may require an investment long before any actual payoff is returned. They all require a long-term commitment to produce results.

The trick is to balance what needs to be done today with the investment it take to build up your retirement account of marketing momentum.
